MAPLE LEAF DIAMONDS

Maple Leaf Diamonds are mined at Canada's first diamond mine, the Ekati™ mine, located in the Northwest Territories.  These diamonds are among the highest quality found anywhere in the world.  Each is laser engraved with a tracking number, the CanadaMark™ symbol and the Maple Leave insignia.  This ensures that the diamond is certified to be of Canadian orgin and allows the diamond to be traced from the mine, through all stages of refinement.  Every Maple Leaf Diamond™ also comes with a Certificate of Origin that bears its unique tracking number.

DIAVIK MINE

Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories, Canada

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the Northwest Territories, Canada, north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700 people, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing 8 million carats or about 1,600 kg of diamonds annually. The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003.  The lifespan of the mine is expected to be 16 to 22 years.

In all its activities, Diavik is committed to protecting the environment and making a positive contribution to local communities through a series of award-winning programmes and agreements.

There is considerable market interest in the distinctiveness and value of Canadian diamonds because of their guarantee of issue-free origin and Canada's high social and environmental standards of mining. The Canadian Federal Government's Competition Bureau has defined a Canadian diamond as one mined in Canada. Rio Tinto Diamonds and Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. support and are signatories to the Canadian Government's Voluntary Code of Conduct for Authenticating Canadian Diamond Claims. This means that both companies work to ensure that diamonds sold as Canadian truly are Canadian, thereby capturing the benefits of that origin for all stakeholders.
